INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “A breathless page-turner, driven by the many revelations Ms. Harper dreams up...You’ll love [her] sleight of hand...A secret on every page.” —The New York Times “One of the most stunning debuts I've ever read... Every word is near perfect.” —David Baldacci A small town hides big secrets in The Dry, an atmospheric, page-turning debut mystery by award-winning author Jane Harper. After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead. Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets.

In this volume, Doug Underwood asks whether much of what is now called literary journalism is, in fact, 'literary,' and whether it should rank with the great novels by such journalist-literary figures as Twain, Cather, and Hemingway, who believed that fiction was the better place for a realistic writer to express the important truths of life.

Brother of the Cheyennes PDF
By:Max Brand
Published on 2013-10-01 by Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.

Rusty Sabin was born to white parents but brought up by the Cheyenne Indians, who named the redheaded boy Red Hawk. His ability to heal the sick and to make strange magic is widely honored throughout the tribe. But in his twenties, Red Hawk sets out to take his place among white people. When Rusty and his stallion White Horse are nearly at the frontier post of Fort Marston, the river boat he’s riding is grounded, and a man called Bill Tenney comes to his rescue. Rusty doesn’t know much about the white man’s ways—especially a white man like Bill Tenney, a thief and a fugitive. Tenney is only interested in one thing—Rusty’s white stallion, considered sacred among the Cheyennes. Meanwhile Major Marston is determined to come between Rusty and his sweetheart, Maisry, and the Cheyennes do all they can to compel Rusty to return to his tribe. First serialized in 1934, Brothers of the Cheyennes—the second installment of the Rusty Sabin trilogy—cemented Max Brand’s reputation as one of the most exciting and talented writers working in the Western genre. To this day, Rusty Sabin remains an indelible American character, caught between two worlds and simply trying to do the right thing.

Published on 2014-04-15 by Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.

A son sets out to make things right and avenge his father’s death in this dark Western noir. Ethan Wilder has been off in the mountains hunting for the last several months. Upon his return to the family Bar Five Ranch, Wilder finds his life in chaos. His brother, Ben, after taking his father’s rifle without permission, has locked his father in the outhouse to avoid punishment. Another brother, Vic, is in jail, accused of beating up a girl in town, and the last of the Wilder brothers, Joel, is up north in Canada, trying to sell horses to the Mounties. Ethan’s father, Jacob, has a reputation in town for raising hell. In his opinion, no man tamed the wilderness with a timid soul, but the newer citizens of the town have now been pushing for the removal of local farmers and ranchers like the Wilders. Things come to a head when his father joins the ranks of local farmers found dead under suspicious circumstances. Ethan has no choice but to turn to revenge to uphold the family name and ensure that the murderers won’t come for him next. Wild Side of the River reveals the dark side of the wild frontier in this gripping tale and modern Western classic. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns—books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians—are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Of Mice and Men PDF
By:John Steinbeck
Published on 1993-09-01 by Penguin

A controversial tale of friendship and tragedy during the Great Depression Over seventy-five years since its first publication, Steinbeck’s tale of commitment, loneliness, hope, and loss remains one of America’s most widely read and taught novels. An unlikely pair, George and Lennie, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression, grasp for their American Dream. They hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him. Of Mice and Men represents an experiment in form, which Steinbeck described as “a kind of playable novel, written in a novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands.” A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. This edition features an introduction by Susan Shillinglaw, one of today’s leading Steinbeck scholars. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Tales of the South PDF
By:William Gilmore Simms
Published on 1996 by Univ of South Carolina Press

William Gilmore Simms - a nineteenth century American writer whose popularity once surpassed that of Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville received his greatest acclaim for such widely read novels as Guy Rivers, The Yemassee, and The Partisan. He also penned an assortment of short stories that, though less well known than his novels, are now regarded by an expanding circle of critics as his most impressive body of work. With Tales of the South, Mary Ann Wimsatt assembles a representative sampling of Simms's short fiction and restores these classic tales to their rightful place in America's literary canon. Deftly combining homespun realism with impressive flights of fantasy, these fourteen stories offer intimate views of nineteenth century work and domesticity while exploring the legends, superstitions, and folk experiences that circulated through all classes and races of antebellum society. Simms's sprightly, highly imaginative tales reflect his ties to British and American romanticism, his genius for tall-tale humor, and his keen interest in Native American culture. In introducing the stories, Wimsatt explores the various contexts - biographical, historical, economic, and literary - from which Simms's short fiction emerged. Beginning with his childhood in Charleston, South Carolina, she chronicles the events that shaped his writing and charts the changing literary fashions that have influenced critical responses to his work from the postbellum era until the late twentieth century. Wimsatt contends that, until recently, Simms's literary achievements have been eclipsed by his proslavery, secessionist stance, by ignorance of his principal genres, and by a general misunderstanding of Southern culture and literature. With Tales of the South, Wimsatt rescues the short stories of this major American writer from contemporary obscurity and assesses the current resurgence of interest in Simms and his literary achievements.

The Great Derangement PDF
By:Amitav Ghosh
Published on 2016-09-14 by University of Chicago Press

Is our imagination adequate to the realities of global warming? The novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that we need art and literature to help us imagine our future in the Anthropocene, but that they are falling short of the task. If culture cannot help us see the realities of our plight, then our era, which so congratulates itself on its self-awareness, may come to be known as the time of the Great Derangement. A case in point is fiction, which is so committed to normalcy and the everyday that it has no space for the improbability of climate change events the persistent droughts, hundred-year storms, and freakish tornadoes. Our politics, likewise, seems unable to mobilize forcefully in response to climate change. Ghosh argues that politics, like literature, has become a matter of individual moral reckoning, a journey of the solitary conscience rather than an arena of collective action. But to limit fiction and politics to individual moral adventure comes at a great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence a task to which fiction, Ghosh argues, is the best suited of all cultural forms. A powerful nonfiction work by one of our most gifted, historically attuned novelists, |The Great Derangement |brings a fresh urgency to thinking on climate change. |
